Can You Adopt a Child in Need?

At any given time in the United States, thousands of children whose parental rights have been severed due to abuse or neglect are available for adoption.  While the children hope and pray for forever families to adopt them, they live in foster or group homes around the country.  The children range in age from infant to eighteen years old.  Some have disabilities that require special care.  Others enter foster care with siblings and hope to remain with them and be adopted by the same family.  Can you adopt a waiting child? If you choose to adopt a child in need of a loving family, it will change their lives (and yours) forever.

Adopt a Child in Need of a Forever Family

Building Arizona Families has been providing adoption services since 2004. We have helped hundreds of Arizona families adopt a waiting child from around the U.S.  Our adoption agency is licensed to provide adoption services for Arizona families. Qualified families can adopt a child needing a loving home from any state in the U.S.

Adoptive families must meet the requirements set forth by the state of Arizona and be approved to adopt a waiting child through the home study process.  Building Arizona Families conducts the home study for adoptive families, walking the family through the requirements a step at a time, providing substantial adoption education and support in the child matching process.

Adopting Foster Children is Truly Life-Changing

Interested in adopting foster children? Many people are unaware of the experiences of foster children in the United States. Children are removed from their homes and placed in the foster care system when it is unsafe for them to remain at home. Parental rights are severed by the state they reside in when the child has suffered abuse or neglect, the parents or caregivers do not correct the behavior, and it is not safe for the child to remain in the home.

When abused children are placed in foster care, they are heartbroken and frightened. When parental rights are severed and the child becomes a ward of the state, they are raised within the foster care system. Without loving parents and a stable home, foster children move an average of three times per year, sometimes to foster families’ homes and sometimes to group homes. Each time a foster child moves, the adult relationships, friendships, and often their school change. The lack of consistent, loving relationships makes it increasingly difficult to love and trust others. Adopting foster children gives them precisely what every child needs – a forever family and a safe, nurturing environment to grow up in.

Adopting Foster Children Provides a Future

When children are not adopted and grow up in foster care, the odds of successful adult life are not in their favor. When children turn eighteen, they legally “age out” of the system and face life without a family support system. Each year, an average of 20,000 youth age out of the system. When this occurs, they are at extremely high risk for substance abuse, homelessness, mental health challenges, and more. The statistics create a powerful case for the absolute necessity of adopting foster children and the fact that adoption truly changes a foster child’s future.

You are invited to attend one of our convenient online adoption seminars. The seminars will provide information on foster, newborn, and Haiti adoptions. Find out dates and times HERE. Who Qualifies for Foster Child Adoption?

Foster child adoption requirements vary from state to state. Building Arizona Families, a licensed, non-profit, and BBB A+ rated adoption agency, serves Arizona families who want to adopt foster children.

Eligibility for Foster Child Adoption

In Arizona, any single adult or married couple can adopt. Stepparents can also adopt foster children if their spouse has legal custody of the child. Adoptive parents must be at least age eighteen to adopt. There is no maximum age for adoption. To qualify for foster child adoption, Arizona requires adoptive parents to be U.S. citizens, pass an FBI and local criminal background check, obtain child abuse registry clearances for each state they have lived in the past five years and have a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Anyone else in the home who is over the age of eighteen must also obtain all the clearances and have a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card. The adoptive family must own or rent a home or apartment. Building Arizona Families will conduct a home study as well. During that time, prospective adoptive families provide the necessary legal documents, receive adoption education, and are interviewed by the adoption agency case worker. View more information about how the adoption home study process works HEREAdoptive families must obtain a physician’s statement verifying emotional and physical health. There is no specific income necessary to adopt foster children, but adoptive families must prove financial stability.

Foster Child Adoption is Probably Easier Than You Think

Federal and state governments, child welfare agencies, and adoption agencies recognize that children thrive in loving families. As a result, once a child’s parental rights are severed, the adoption process can move quite quickly. Building Arizona Families has helped hundreds of Arizona families through the foster child adoption process, and we would be honored to support you in your adoption journey.

They want forever families. They want to be adopted. If this moves your heart, you might be surprised at who can qualify to adopt foster children in Arizona and throughout the United States.

Criteria to Adopt Foster Children

To adopt foster children, you have to pass a home inspection, but that doesn’t mean you have to own your own home. Home can be an apartment. You have to be financially stable, but you don’t have to be wealthy. The process to adopt foster children is the least expensive of all types of adoption.

You need to provide a loving family environment, but you don’t have to be married. Single parents are welcome to adopt foster children in Arizona and throughout the United States.

To adopt foster children through Building Arizona Families, you need to be residents of Arizona. The foster children do not have to be residents of Arizona, and Building Arizona Families will work with you to adopt a foster child or foster children that best suit your family.

If You Adopt Foster Children, You Change a Child’s Future

Foster children whose parental rights are severed and are unable to be reunited with family are truly orphans. They are cared for by state child protective agencies and primarily live in group homes. On average, they move three times a year, which often means changing schools, losing trusting relationships, friends and encouraging teachers. Over time, these vulnerable children lose down emotionally, and do not want to continue to make caring relationships only to love them. They also fall behind in school because of the frequency of moving, and in many instances get discouraged and quit trying. If they are not adopted out of the foster care system, the outcomes are even worse. Children who were abuse and neglected now find themselves facing the world alone as young adults without the support they need to successfully navigate life. If no one steps up to adopt foster children and they age out of the system, most do not attend college. Many wind up homeless and addicted.

The story changes dramatically when they are adopted. Being welcomed into a loving family and stable living environment helps them heal emotionally. They often improve rapidly in school, and their outlook on their future becomes much brighter.

All Kids Need Music Non Profit Foster Care Music Program

All Kids Need Music, a music non profit, is changing foster children’s lives through the transformative power of therapeutic music lessons. Watch the recent television interview below to learn more:
KOLD News 13 in Tucson, Arizona shares how All Kids Need Music is connecting children in foster care with music teachers trained in trauma.
“These children who have been through horrific, horrific abuse are the ones who need the trauma healing,” said Vicki Isaac, the founder of We Are Their Future, which helps foster children find forever homes. However, she said until that day comes, many children can live in up to three households a year. The virtual music lessons give them the opportunity to see a familiar face no matter where they go. “If you can imagine what that does to a child who doesn’t have parents. Who do you trust? Do you want to build another relationship with someone? After a while these children start shutting down,” she said.
From just one month of lessons, music teacher Karen Shaffstall can already see her student progressing. “She grasps everything I say to her,” Shaffstall said. “She’s on the edge of her seat listening.”
The music teachers are helping students develop musical skills and a meaningful bond. “I feel like we’ve built a special kinship, a relationship and this happens very often in music settings,” she said. “It’s kind of that family feeling.”
Providing children consistency and an adult they can trust is the ultimate goal of the program. “I said if you ever need anything, you know if you need to talk or whatever I’m here not only musically. She said that’s so great,” Shaffstall said.
Each child gets their own instrument which helps give them a sense of ownership. “While we work on finding forever families for them, they need the healing,” Isaac said.
