Music Is Healing Arizona Orphans
All Kids Need Music is helping Arizona’s orphans heal from life threatening, heartbreaking abuse and neglect. These vulnerable abused children are at significantly higher risk for negative physical, psychological, and cognitive outcomes. Through no fault of their own, they have not only experienced horrific trauma, but continue to suffer the long term effects of the abuse they endured. Without intervention, these long term effects can rob them of a the chance for a productive, happy life.
Fortunately, research illustrates that abused children may be able to recover with
appropriate interventions. Learning to play music is one intervention proven to improve cognitive functioning, educational outcomes, and positively impact mental health.
All Kids Need Music focuses on providing Arizona foster children whose parental rights are severed the opportunity to heal through the transformative power of learning to play a musical instrument.
All Kids Need Music is a non-profit organization staffed with professional trauma-trained music teachers. The organization provides the musical instrument of the child’s choice or voice lessons (ten instruments to choose from). Lessons are conducted online to eliminate transportation barriers and maintain a consistent teacher/mentor relationship because children in foster care frequently move from group home to group home. Changing group homes hampers the foster child’s ability to build trusting adult relationships with care providers, teachers, etc. Consistency with the child’s music instructor rebuilds trust in caring adults.
The trauma trained teacher gently mentors the abused child while creating a positive outlet for emotional expression, which is key to healing. The All Kids Need Music program for Arizona’s orphans also gives each wounded child ownership – their own musical instrument, the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities, and a growing set of musical skills to build self esteem.
Word is getting around – as orphaned foster children discover that other foster children are taking music lessons, they want to take lessons as well.
All Kids Need Music urgently needs corporate and individual sponsors to cover the costs of the lessons and instruments so that every orphaned Arizona child that wants to take music or voice lessons can do so. Helping Arizona orphans heal from horrific abuse that no child should ever endure is something every caring Arizonan and Arizona business can do something about.
